If Financing is Marriage, is M&A Death?

cypress hillNot a week goes by where I don?t get an email that goes like this: ?I wanted to reconnect, as I've recently left [the company that bought my startup]. ?Long story, but suffice it to say their executives and I did not share the same vision for the future.? Let?s face it, although there have been some smashing successes, more often than not, Mergers & Acquisitions fail.? If you didn?t know any better, you?d think that selling your company amounted to a kiss of death, when it ought to be closer to a rebirth and the start of something? better.? Indeed, while raising money from investors feels like marriage, M&A sure feels like death.

94% The Secret World of Arrietty

All Critics (114) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (107) | Rotten (7)

As pretty as it is, this Secret World is too Earthbound by far.

The Secret World of Arrietty is a marvelously captivating animated feature about very tiny people and the full-scale world they inhabit.

Yonebayashi gives Arrietty an excellent sense of balance, with the adventure aspects of the story, which feel legitimately dangerous providing well-paced contrast the film's more placid moments.

It's an enjoyable and attractive-looking film, but a little of that "Speed Racer" energy wouldn't have been such a bad thing.

The visual details are inventive, and the animation - particularly the colors - is lovely.

"The Secret World of Arrietty'' is a feast for the eyes that will engage the entire family.

Like motion picture Yoga--quietly cathartic and just the thing to raise your kids on.

It certainly belongs in the second rank of Ghibli fantasies. But give it a chance.

Most will be caught up in its beautiful spell, immersed in great storytelling at its finest.

The soft-focus animation has an impressionistic quality, as if a gentle breeze had wafted across a Monet canvas.

This smart, winsome fairy tale is not quite Hiyao Miyazaki, but it still might be the best animated film that (some few) will see all year.

Another Studio Ghibli wonder, as heartbreaking for its devotion to craft, artistry and intelligent storytelling (for viewers of all ages) as for its themes of inevitable exile and impossible love.

There's a gentle movie from Japan that's going to seem familiar to a lot of fans of the series of books about 'The Borrowers.'

...yet another jewel in the crown of Studio Ghibli.

...creates a sense of wide-eyed wonder and discovery as we experience the awe-inspiring mysteries of an ordinary house as seen from the four-inch borrower's point of view.

The animation, a gorgeous blend of bewitching watercolored backgrounds and poignantly rendered characters, is, as ever, beyond reproach.

What is most effective is the way the sense of peaceful shelter and retreat in the country setting contrasts with the precariousness of the situations faced by Shawn and Arrietty.

It's hard to imagine this scenario playing out with more delicacy and care than animator-turned-director Yonebayashi Hiromasa brings to bear.

Arrietty has an elegiac mood, like a more wan and sedate Toy Story.

Gently enchanting, an extraordinary adventure

There may not be a frenzy of action and fast cuts but each scene has meticulous details about how the borrowers live, how they make use of the things in their environment to survive.

Tiny people who live in the walls of a rural home are put at risk when they are discovered by the humans residing there. Studio Ghibli offers a soothing animated version of the classic children's novels.

the basic elements of loneliness, friendship, and the fragility of life are intact, along with that ineffable sense of wonder, melancholy, and magic

By being less bizarre than SPIRITED AWAY and having more of a human center to the film, THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY is one of Studio Ghibli's best efforts to date.

A beautiful family film based on THE BORROWERS will delight audiences of all ages

Home Addition: Seven Home Remodeling Investments | Improvements

Article by Kevin Germain

Making the most of your home is the theory in our country right now. It used to be every five years people could upgrade but now with the hit on the housing community people are staying put and making the most out of their homes. This includes remodels, home additions, landscaping and everything and anything to make your home into the palace you crave. Why go on vacations where you live in the lap of luxury and come home to the everyday so-so life. Create that luxury within your home and continue to enjoy the time you spend in it with your family.

What remodeling investments are trendy right now that will improve the value on your home? Good question. Experts say that there are seven main improvements that you can do that will create value without putting yourself in debt that will not be recouped in the long run.

Home Improvements To Consider

Home Additions: This includes sun rooms, porches, sheds, bathrooms, bedrooms and fun rooms that create family space. Home additions can impact your home environment tremendously. Adding on a shed can be an inexpensive fix to a lack of storage and closets inside your home and garage. It is often hard to find places for yard tools, boat supplies, kids outdoor toys etc so it all gets crammed into the available space in your home. Sheds do away with this issue. You can build them in whatever size space you have so it is perfect for all different types of land settings. Items such as sun rooms and porches emphasize spending time with family so those settings really drive home sales.

Bathroom Remodels: The best part of vacations is often the spa centers attached to the hotels. Why not create this everyday in your own home. Often you can complete a bathroom renovation within a reasonable budget. Update fixtures, cabinets, storage space and if the money permits the bathing area. Jets can add something to the bath/shower experience that nothing else can. Make the remodel a sanctuary where you can retreat to after long days.

Kitchen Remodels: Although a more expensive remodeling situation, kitchen remodels do tend to give you the biggest return on your investment. The kitchen is the center of most households. In the kitchen people gather to talk about the day?s events over a glass of wine and making dinner. Make remodeling choices that make life easier for you and create a space that is conducive for time together. Upgraded counters and appliances help to create a space of luxury.

Basement Renovations: Basements are an area that can greatly increase the value of your home. When considering a basement remodel look into your family?s needs. Do you need space for a recreational room, a guest room, an office or even a study? This is the space to use for those needs. Unlike an addition you are keeping the square footage the same but improving the use of the space.

Windows: This is a great renovation to reduce heating and cooling cost along with increasing a home?s value. If you can add windows with blinds between the glass you can will really be increasing energy efficiency and the overall look of your home.

Siding: Often the outside of a home is neglected. We don?t live looking at it daily so the needs it proposes go unnoticed. A new face on your home will dramatically change the overall look of your home and add curb appeal. To a new owner this is the first look they will have of your home and you want the first impression to be favorable to add to the general attitude they have going into your home.

Roofing: This is one area in home improvements that is expanding like wild fire when it comes to materials you can use. Traditional shingles are still available however; metal, tiles and slate are becoming popular options. Actually I drove by a store that sold landscaping supplies and saw that their roof was covered in growing plants. Roofing is truly diverse these days.

Your home is your sanctuary. Whatever home improvement jobs that you choose make sure they are upgrades that you are going to enjoy with your family for years to come. Don?t let the idea that your home will not sell if put on the market detour you from your dream home. Live in it while you live in it and worry about selling it if and when the time comes.

Oil spill anniversary marked by somber stats

Friday marks the two-year anniversary of the massive BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf Coast. While the FDA says the local fish are safe to eat, several new reports suggest that local wildlife and the overall environment continue to suffer from damaging effects of what many consider the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

The Associated Press reports that a number of fish in the Gulf are suffering from visible maladies, including, "open sores, parasitic infections, chewed-up-looking fins, gashes," and " "mysterious black streaks" along their bodies.

On Wednesday, BP sealed an out-of-court settlement for $7.8 billion with lawyers representing thousands of individuals and businesses affected by the spill. However, the company released a statement insisting that seafood in the region was safe for human consumption.

"Seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is among the most tested in the world, and, according to the FDA and NOAA, it is as safe now as it was before the accident," the statement reads.

While the evidence of continued and extensive environmental damage is "nowhere near conclusive," the damage appears to have extended beyond marine life to the Gulf's deep-water coral, seaweed beds and other species of plants.

There is lots of circumstantial evidence that something is still awry," said Christopher D'Elia, dean of Louisiana State University's School of the Coast and Environment. "On the whole, it is not as much environmental damage as originally projected. Doesn't mean there is none."

A federally funded study conducted last summer by scientists found that 3 percent of sampled fish had gashes, ulcers and parasites symptomatic of environmental contamination, according to lead researcher Steve Murawski, a biologist at the University of South Florida.

"The closer to the oil rig, the higher the frequency was" of sick fish, Murawski said.

Intuit GoPayment goes live in Canada, more rectangular than Square

Image

Looks like Canada just scored another mobile credit card payment system within its borders. It was back at CES when Intuit revealed its updated GoPayment dongle for our neighbors up north, and now the company's announced that the service has officially launched in the region. Once you're application is approved, you'll get the card reader for free without any contract -- and best of all, GoPayment works on a "pay-as-you-go" basis (3.3 percent if you enter the digits, 2.7 percent with a swipe). It's currently purposed for iDevices with a free downloadable app, accepting Visa and Mastercards, but Intuit notes that Android and BlackBerry compatibility is in the works. With services NetSecure and PayPal also claiming space in the country, we're still left to wonder when Square -- essentially the godfather of this type of thing -- will finally be joining the card-swiping party in the great white north. If you're curious for all the details or wanting to apply for yourself, head on down to the source link below.

[Thanks, Mike]

Ikea Builds Electronics Into Furniture With Uppleva Line

A new all-in-one home entertainment center announced Tuesday by Ikea may give some Baby Boomers a sense of deja vu. The new product line is called "Uppleva" by the Swedish furniture retailer, known for making attractively designed products with odd names and selling them at affordable prices. It combines all the components of a home entertainment system into a single piece of furniture.

Lionel Richie Scores First #1 Album In 25 Years

Nicki Minaj's Roman Reloaded slips 68 percent in week two.
By Gil Kaufman

In what might mark one of the longest-ever droughts between #1 albums, Lionel Richie will have something to dance on the ceiling about next week, when his all-star country comeback album, Tuskegee, grabs the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. After debuting at #2 and falling to #4 last week, Richie managed to hit #1 on sales of 129,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

Thanks to a sales increase of 35 percent boosted by his prime-time CBS special, "Lionel Richie and Friends," the former Commodores singer and solo star will be back on top for the first time since 1986's Dancing on the Ceiling.

Richie's numbers were more than enough to stop Adele from reclaiming the pole position, though she did move another 92,000 copies of 21, to put her past the 8.7 million mark. It was a major comedown for Nicki Minaj, as her first #1 debut, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, slipped 68 percent in its second week, falling to #3 on sales of 81,000.

Among the new faces in the top 10: Monica, whose New Life came in at #4 (69,000), blues veteran Bonnie Raitt, #6 with Slipstream (64,000), and rapper Hoodie Allen, who debuted at #10 with All American (27,000).

The rest of the top 10: One Direction, Up All Night (#5, 66,000); Gotye, Making Mirrors (up 111 percent following a "Saturday Night Live" appearance and a spot on "Glee" to #7 on sales of 54,000); Alabama Shakes, Boys & Girls (up eight spots to #8, 43,000); and Rascal Flatts, who dropped six spots in week two to #9 with Changed (41,000).

Counting Crows mark a return to the charts with a #11 bow for Underwater Sunshine (or what we did on our summer vacation) (27,000), while Madonna's MDNA continued its free-fall, dropping 10 more spots in week three to #18 as sales fell another 56 percent to 21,000.

Those high-profile appearances helped Gotye grab the #1 spot on the iTunes singles chart with "Somebody That I Used to Know," which bested fun.'s "We Are Young." The #3 position belonged to One Direction ("What Makes You Beautiful"), followed by Justin Bieber ("Boyfriend"), Carly Rae Jepsen ("Call Me Maybe"), Nicki's "Starships," Flo Rida ("Wild Ones"), The Wanted ("Glad You Came"), Kanye West ("Mercy") and the "Glee" cast's version of "Somebody That I Used to Know."

Richie reigned supreme on the iTunes albums chart as well, followed by One Direction, Gotye, Hoodie Allen, Minaj, Adele, Raitt, Of Monsters and Men's My Head Is an Animal, Alabama Shakes and Trip Lee's The Good Life.

Next week will bring new releases from Jason Mraz, Train and Jack Johnson.

Her Little Shadows

by Martha Wadsworth

I saw a young mother?

With eyes full of laughter,?

And two little shadows

Came following after.?

Wherever she moved,?

They were always right there -?

Holding on to her skirts,?

Hanging on to her chair,?

Before her, behind her -?

An adhesive pair.?

"Don't you ever get weary

As day after day

Your two little tagalongs

Get in your way?"

She smiled as she shook?

Her pretty young head,?

And I'll always remember?

The words that she said:?

"It's good to have shadows

That run when you run,?

That laugh when you're happy?

And hum when you hum -?

For you only have shadows

When your life's filled with sun!"

Now that my son is crawling, he literally follows me around the house. It's so endearing but every once in a while if I really need to get something done, it can get a little frustrating. In those moments I try to remember this sweet little poem and be grateful for this precious phase of my life. I know that one day, when he's all grown up, my heart will long to have him here again, following me around and sitting at my feet once more.

Read it Later becomes Pocket, drops its price to free

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/17/pocket-reading-app/
Skimming the news later is no match for consuming it fresh, but we still live in a world with connectivity dead zones -- riding the subway, cruising the Pacific at 35,000 feet -- making an offline reading app a necessity for oft-disconnected consumers. Pocket, formerly known as "Read it Later," lets you save online content to read when you're not within web's reach, or even when you are. Pocket could also be a good resource for folks that stumble upon some interesting content, but simply don't have time to read it at that very moment. You can also grab videos and images to watch later -- everything is presented in a clean, easy to view format, searchable by publication, keyword or custom tags. And while the former version -- Read it Later -- ran you a cool 99 cents, Pocket is free, and available now for Android, iOS and the Kindle Fire.

Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air

Editors' Note (4/11/2012): After the most recent version of iOS was released, the previously mentioned issue of interrupted AirPlay streams was cleared up. We have since tested and confirmed this, and as such have revised the review and score to reflect that improvement.

As AirPlay speaker systems increase in number?most of them still being referred to as "docks" despite a lack of an actual dock for an iPhone, iPod, or iPad?a few things are becoming increasingly clear. Almost all AirPlay docks are black, and the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air is no exception. They are all pretty expensive?the G-17 is a hefty $549.99 (direct). For the most part, all AirPlay docks thus far offer quality audio, ranging from booming bass, as with the Audyssey Audio Dock Air ($399.99, 3.5 stars) to superb high fidelity sound, as with the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air ($599.95, 4 stars). The G-17 sounds excellent, and as of the most recent iOS update, has resolved the streaming issues we experienced in the past.?

Design
The rounded, glossy black piano finish of the Gallery G-17 Air is striking, as is the horizontal array of drivers?two 20-watt woofers in the middle and two 10-watt tweeters on the far left and right ends of the front panel. A small Klipsch logo and a remote sensor are the only other things on the front panel. All of the controls are located on the small right-hand side panel?Power, Volume, Input Select, and Wi-Fi, which is used for inital setup. The back panel houses the power cable connection, a 3.5mm Aux input, and a USB connection. You'll need a Phillips head screwdriver to attach the glass stand to the speaker unit (screws are included), but the G-17 is also wall-mountable. Also included with the G-17 and its stand: a rubber cover for the input panel on the back, a black cloth grille cover in case you want to hide the awesome looking drivers, a remote control, the power supply, an owners manual, and?seriously?white gloves, so your fingertips don't smudge the glossy black surface when you move the system.

The included remote can be frustrating to use?depending on the angle, and strength of the Wi-Fi signal, adjusting the volume can be a very delayed process. When the signal is good and the audio is streaming smoothly, the remote, which is a simple, thin, black plastic controller with membrane buttons, works fine. It has Power, Volume, Play/Pause, Skip Forward/Backward, and Input Select buttons.

Performance
The Gallery G-17 offers fairly powerful, refined audio performance for its size. There are four drivers but no subwoofer, and the net result is a audiophile-friendly flat response, devoid of booming deep bass but quite capable of articulating low frequencies well. Kick drums sound tight, not thunderous. Lower register stringed instruments sound pleasantly resonant, not overly boosted or booming. John Adams' modern classical piece, "The Chairman Dances," sounds neither overly bright nor rumbly. Instead, the G-17's response favors mid-range frequencies, occasionally allowing high frequency percussion hits, like wood blocks, to pop out from the more commanding force of the stringed instruments. At maximum volume on deep bass tracks, the G-17 doesn't distort, but this is partially due to the lack of booming bass pushed out by the speakers. Still, many systems that have no subwoofer try to reproduce deep bass frequencies with the result of distortion, and the G-17 avoids this problem. The Knife's "Silent Shout," at maximum volume, doesn't sound as thumping as it would on a system with a sub, but it does not distort either, and the bass frequencies are still well represented. Basically, the G-17 offers a nice, smooth response throughout the frequency range that doesn't exaggerate the lows or ignore them. Fans of accurate response over booming bass will be pleased.

Because AirPlay relies on Wi-Fi, it's dependent on the bandwidth of the local network. The more tasks being completed on the Wi-Fi network, no matter how un-taxing on the bandwidth, like sending an email, the more likely the stream is to pause, or stop completely. We have since tested the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air again with the new version of iOS and experienced little to no interruption in the stream. This is a vast improvement over our initial tests of the speaker, and we have revised its score accordingly.

Apple is reportedly choosing to either switch to or include Bluetooth streaming into the AirPlay feature. Even a year or so ago, Bluetooth streaming was still a weak audio solution, with very little bass and low bit-rate fidelity. But recent developments have strengthened the audio quality greatly, as evidenced by recent Editors' Choices, the portable Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars) and the fantastic JBL OnBeat Xtreme ($499.95, 4.5 stars), which shows up as an AirPlay device on an iPhone or iPad, but uses Bluetooth. As of the most recent iOS update, AirPlay and Bluetooth seem to be similarly reliable.

The Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air remains at the top of the list of AirPlay docks, in terms of audio performance, with the Klipsch Gallery G-17 close to the top with the most recent version of iOS. The streaming issues have been resolved, and it's now about as functional as a Bluetooth speaker, with excellent audio quality.?

93% Monsieur Lazhar

Monsieur Lazhar is a affecting and gentle human drama with an exceptional cast about death, immigration, clinical depression and childhood -and still more weighty stuff -yet all the heaviness is told with humor and sensitivity. Director Felardeau has ellicited deep and resonant performances from his entire wonderful cast, including two spectactular children (Emilien Neron and Sophie Nelisse).Bachir Lazhar (Fellag) is a mysterious Algerian refugee who becomes a subsitute teacher after a Montreal public school teacher hangs herself in her classroom on a school day! The thrust of the plot is his attempt to deal with the grief of the suicidal teacher's students and within the administration of the school itself led by the Principal (the marvellous Danielle Proulx. ) He also has a budding romance with a fellow teacher and fractious relationships with some parents and students. There is not a false note from any of the cast at any moment. The restraint of the acting druing intense and hightly charged emotions is ultimately much more moving than big melodramatic screeching histrionics. Algerian comedian Felag gives an unforgettable performance as a man who manages to suggest a devastating back story without actually spelling out what it is. So he is uniquely qualified to help the children with their grief. However, the plot situations themselves are either extremely unlikely (and unbelievable) or not properly explained. Let's start with why a beloved teacher (albeit with mental problems) would hang herself in a school room during a school day. I might buy that if given some detail of what this teacher was all about, but it remains a mystery. Then let's wonder why a responsible principal would hire a guy off the street as a teacher, not check one credential on his CV in a very PC and formalized school system? The film suffers in its second half (Act 3 for all you budding screenwriters) with some quick leaps to resolve things. We are also cheated out of some relationships that have developed too quickly - for example, the special bond between Lazhar and Alice, one of his students who has helped deal with her grief. This may be because it is based on a short one man play written by Quebec playwright Evelyne De La Cheniere, who appears as Alice's mother, an airline pilot. Some of those leaps in a one act monologue need to be filled in for a full length film and Felardeau has failed to do that. (Or scenes are lying on the cutting room floor - I know there is NO cutting room floor anymore - that I don't know about. )However, Felardeau has done so many things right, that his film richly deserves its Academy Award nomination. Whatever carping I did the previous paragraph should not deter anyone from wanting to see this wonderful film.

ZTE Optik getting a minor update, brings some fixes and enhancements

ZTE optik

Sprint is pushing out a small update for the 7-inch ZTE Optik today, bringing a few welcome bug fixes to the tablet and some decent software enhancements. According to the official changelog, we should be seeing the following:

  • Google DRM solution
  • Google Music
  • Google+
  • Persistent notification after BT transfer
  • Software version corrected in x-wap profile
  • Sim City closes when attempting to purchase while connected to Wifi
  • Sim City download issue fixed
  • Response when connected to a computer via USB cable

As the Optik ships with Honeycomb, Google Music and Plus weren't baked in. This update changes that and drops the Google services, along with unwanted, but necessary, DRM solutions into the system itself. Add in some small fixes for Bluetooth notifications, app specific bugs getting addressed, and hopefully a fix for the issue where a computer couldn't communicate via the USB cable and you have the makings of a nice little update here.

I just finished up the review for the Optik this weekend, but I'll hold it back a few days and check out this new update.
